By now we’ve all heard how terrible McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes are for you. They’re loaded with fat, calories, sugar and artificial ingredients. I’ll spare you the disturbing details since they are exactly what we’ve come to expect from America’s top fast food chain.

If you’re a fan of the Shamrock Shake, but you’re participating in the Daniel Fast — or maybe you’re just trying to watch what you eat — I’ve got a tasty alternative for you. My dairy free version starts with a base of coconut milk, and it’s sweetened with dates. Most of the flavor is derived from extracts, and the green hue comes from a handful of spinach.

PB&J Smoothie

My heart goes out to all the kiddos who are allergic to peanut butter. It’s such a yummy source of protein! PB&J sandwiches were a staple of my childhood, and now I rely on them whenever I need a quick and easy meal for my girls.

This smoothie is a delightful combination of fruit and peanut butter that will fill you up and leave you feeling nostalgic for your plastic Care Bears lunchbox.

Chai Chia Smoothie

Coffee and tea are the two things I’ve missed most during these first few days of the Daniel Fast. Besides the obvious caffeine boost, there’s just something so comforting about a hot drink on a cold morning. Spiced chai is one of my favorites. Although this chai chia smoothie won’t warm you up, it will be a satisfying start to your day.

Cardamom is probably the most distinct flavor in chai spice, but it may not be readily available in your pantry. If you decide to omit it from this recipe, you’ll still have a tasty smoothie, it just won’t have that signature chai flavor.

Chia seeds add fiber and protein, among other nutrients. They’re also high in omega-3 fatty acids and have more antioxidants than blueberries. Because of their ability to absorb large amounts of water, they expand in the stomach and help you feel full.

  • 1 Medjool date, pitted
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Dash of cloves
